Apeldoorn, The Netherlands – Eight men between the ages of 16 and 23 have been arrested as suspects of fraud. The group is suspected of having participated in fraud through bank help desk fraud. In this case, someone poses as an employee of a bank and thus defrauds people. In this investigation, an 84-year-old man from Apeldoorn became the victim. The man has lost 70,000 euros due to the shrewd scam.
The investigation started after a report of a scam in mid-January. The victim was approached by an ’employee’ of a bank. After a long phone call and installing a program that allowed the fraudster to look into the victim’s computer, the scammer managed to siphon away tens of thousands of euros. Who of the arrested suspect played which role in the fraud is being investigated.
An investigation showed that the group was engaged in fraud from a holiday park in Drenthe. There was an immediate response and the suspects were arrested. The men come from the province of Groningen and Drenthe and are currently detained. During the search of the holiday home, several laptops were seized, around 20 telephones, several SIM cards and two weapons, which are being investigated whether they are real firearms or not.
